Discuss the Plurality of the Malaysian Society and its Effects on You
Malaysia; one of the countries in the whole world that has a plurality in its nation. Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Ibanese; we are all Malaysians. Islam, Christian, Buddhist, Hindus; we are still Malaysians. Malaysia is a country where you can find a variety of people with different backgrounds and not everyone shares the same traits as us. The uniqueness of Malaysia is what attracts the whole world into the country.
The plurality of the Malaysian society has affected me in several ways. One of the ways it has affected me is by language. When I was young, I only know how to speak Malay and English. When I came to kindergarten and proceed with elementary school, actually until now, I started to speak a bit of Mandarin, Cantonese and also very little Hindi. I was attracted by the beauty of the languages spoken by the citizens of Malaysia and it makes me elated when I get to understand a bit of what they are talking about. Not to mention, I also know a bit of Dusun which is the language spoken by the locals in Sabah and it's quite cool.
Not only that, it affects me on how we Malaysian are comfortable working with people that is not in the same colony. When I read history books, I remembered that Malays stick with the Malays, Chinese people with the Chinese and Indians with the Indians. The society before independence and after independence has changed a lot. Now, all of us including me are working with each other without any single complications and honestly, I couldn't imagine myself working in an environment which consists of shares the same traits as me. It shows me that sometimes, you need to be diverse to adapt yourself well in the society.
I am not sure about the next point but I am going to say it anyway. The plurality of the Malaysian society has me has the curiosity on other races' lifestyles; starting from its food until its beliefs. For me, it is really fascinating when I get to witness other people's ways on doing things and how they do it. The Malays celebrate Hari Raya after a month of fasting, the Chinese has its Chinese zodiacs and the Indians have its own ritual beliefs, etc. I enjoy a lot when I get to see people doing their own practice that has been brought down from generations to another.
That is all from me! Well, it is kind of a hard topic but not really that hard. I enjoy writing about it and I will see you next time!
